Explore the inter-relationship between materials and design

Due to covid-19 constrains, we are not able to go back to school to check out the wall of materials located in the SP Library. Instead, we were given a link with a extensive list of materials available on the wall with detailed descriptions, features and uses according to the material selected.

We were tasked to find a suitable material that can be a direct replacement in an existing product to improve it without any design change as well as finding a use for this material in an existing product that is made possible only by a change in design.

Chemical name for material selected

• Forton PPS

• Fortron® Polyphenylene Sulphide

Why this material?

1. high-temperature resistance

2. semi-crystalline polymer high thermal stability

Discussion

Some struggle faces

• unable to think of any products that Forton PPS can replace any part of the product

How do we fix this issue?

• Help from our lecturer, Ms Oh

• Realised that we misunderstood the question

We manage to bring out a potential product that can use this material as well as an existing product.

With this, we think there are even more products that can also use this material such as pumps, or existing products such as planes that use this material. We might also be able to use this thinking process to put into our idea and also maybe into our Capstone Project.
